What Is Crab Island?
Crab Island is one of the most iconic destinations on Florida’s Emerald Coast — and despite the name, you won’t find many crabs there. What you will find is a submerged sandbar in Destin Harbor, just north of the Marler Bridge, where the water is crystal-clear, typically 2–6 feet deep, and bursting with activity all summer long.
Every sunny day from late spring through early fall, hundreds of boats anchor around the sandbar, creating a floating party unlike anywhere else in the world. Floating vendors serve up tacos, cocktails, and snow cones directly to your boat. Families wade in the shallows while kids jump from inflatable water slides. It’s part beach party, part family outing, part social scene — and it’s completely unique to Destin.
How to Get to Crab Island
Crab Island is only accessible by water. There are three main ways to get there:
1. Rent a Boat
The most popular way to visit is to rent a boat and head to Crab Island yourself. With a pontoon boat rental, you can load up your whole group, bring a cooler, and anchor right in the thick of the action. The boat ride from Destiny Water Adventures to Crab Island takes about 10–15 minutes.
2. Book a Guided Tour
If you prefer a guided experience, consider booking the Ultimate Crab Island Tour with Destiny Water Adventures. Our captains know the best anchoring spots and can give you the full insider experience, including stories about the island’s history and tips for making the most of your visit.
3. Jet Ski
Adventurous visitors often take jet skis to Crab Island. It’s a quick and exciting way to zip across the harbor, and you can park your jet ski in the shallows while you enjoy the sandbar.
What to Do at Crab Island
Float and Swim
The most popular activity is simply floating in the warm, calm water. The sandbar is shallow enough to stand in most places, making it perfect for all ages. Bring an inflatable float or rent one from the vendors on site.
Visit Floating Vendors
The floating vendors at Crab Island are legendary. Pull up to a vendor boat and order fish tacos, cold drinks, cocktails, ice cream, and more. It’s a truly unique dining experience — eating great food while floating in crystal-clear water.
Water Toys and Inflatables
Several vendor boats rent inflatable water slides, trampolines, and floats right at the sandbar. Kids (and adults) go absolutely wild for the giant inflatables. Some vendors also offer jet ski tours, paddleboard rentals, and parasailing.
Watch the Sunset
If you time your visit right, you can catch an incredible sunset from Crab Island. The sky lights up in shades of orange, pink, and purple over the harbor, and the experience is absolutely magical. For an even more romantic evening, pair your Crab Island visit with a private sunset cruise.
Best Time to Visit Crab Island
Crab Island is most active from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. The peak summer months of June, July, and August see the largest crowds, with hundreds of boats anchored simultaneously. If you want a less crowded experience, visit in May or September when the weather is still warm but the crowds thin out.
The best time of day to arrive is mid-morning (10am–noon) to secure a prime anchoring spot before the afternoon rush. Vendors typically operate from about 10am to 5–6pm, so plan accordingly if you want the full experience.
What to Bring to Crab Island
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+): There’s no shade on the sandbar. Reapply every 90 minutes.
- Cooler with water and drinks: While vendors are available, having your own drinks saves money and ensures you stay hydrated.
- Waterproof bags: Keep your phone, keys, and wallet protected from splashes.
- Anchor and line: If you’re renting a boat, make sure it comes with an anchor (most do).
- Cash: Some floating vendors are cash-only, so bring small bills.
- Reef-safe sunscreen: Help protect the beautiful emerald waters by using a reef-safe formula.
